What is an MX Record?

An MX Record (Mail Exchange Record) specifies the mail server responsible for accepting email messages on behalf of a recipient's domain. It also indicates preference (priority) if multiple mail servers are used.

If your MX records are misconfigured, you won't be able to receive emails. You can also test your mail server's responsiveness using our SMTP Test Tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiple MX records provide redundancy. Each record has a priority value; if the primary server (lower priority number) is unreachable, the sending server will try the next one (higher priority number).
No, MX records are specifically for email routing. Modifying them will not impact your website's availability (which relies on A or CNAME records).
